Join me as we discuss:

A fantastic article at Demand Euphoria called Ten More Ways to Confuse a Child

10 tongue-in-cheek things that are really funny, but also leave you going “oh crap…I do that…”.

SHOW NOTES

We typically have reeeeeaaaallly high standards for our kids but turn around a do that exact same thing we just told them not to leaving them completely confused.  And when we get confronted on the matter we look at that person with feigned disbelief and say “what?!?!”

Vicki over at Demand EUPHORIA delivers another fantastic article on some of the double-standards we have with our kids.  Vicki, a fellow unschooler like Trey, does a great job of bringing out some of those things you can’t help but facepalm on and think “crap, I do that too.”

Episode 206 Gibson Pebble Jar System Explained…In Detail!

Gibson Pebble Jar System

Gibson Pebble Jar System

Join me as we discuss:

The Gibson Family Pebble Jar System.

How and why it works so well.

How fast should we fill the jars?

How do we be most successful at implementing the pebble jar system?

How do you handle different ages?

SHOW NOTES

I have been talking for a long time here at FPN about the pebble jar system that we use (also called a token economy).  At it’s most basic form, token economies are a lot like the tokens kids get at arcades for willing etc.  They can then exchange them for a toy that carries value to them whether it be a cheap plastic Chinese-made toy or electronic they pick up at the prize station.

While this may sound over-simplistic or patronizing, it can actually be quite effective.  When we just don’t wanna take the flippin’ time to get them a Blizzard at Dairy Queen every time they are nice to their brother, or do what we ask without complaining, token economies come into play.

This allows them to be rewarded and get that ooye gooey feeling when they get something right that builds up to that thing that they are wanting.  It helps us financially and teaches kids how to save as well.

Join us today as we discuss the Gibson family pebble jar system and why it helps us reward kids without having to get them some every flippin’ time they do something good!

Episode 205 FPN Classic: No-Nadoes

No-NadosJoin me as we discuss:

*What in the world is a NO-Nado?

*How to turn NO-Nados into positive events.

*How these NO-Nados can actually create the problems we despise in the “2’s”.

*The way to combat them.

SHOW NOTES

It can be very easy to get caught up in the no-nado syndrome with our kids.  “No.  Quit it!  “Would you just stop!”  We wind up spending so much time telling our kids to stop doing something, that we forget to tell them what we want them do do differently!

And seriously, how bad does that suck for a person, and especially a kid!   Today we discuss how to combat no-nados and even turn terrible-twos into something that doesn’t make us wish we could smash our head through a wall.

A very special guest: Jeffs daughter Mary Hannah talks to the audience as well.

Episode 204 The Dinner Blues

Food Fight by IAN RANSLEY DESIGN + ILLUSTRATION at Flickr.

Join me as we discuss:

A listener question on kids not eating, and the conflict most of us have experienced.

Power stuggles on finishing our plates and Trey’s erroneous beliefs he is still relearning.

THE MOST VITAL thing when it comes to disagreements on parental ideologies.

SHOW NOTES

Often our biggest fights come in the smallest packages.  Dinner time can be a very quite and calm experience, or else it can be a major catastrophe.  A listener wrote in and asked some very good and very poignant questions on kids dinners and where the lines should be drawn.

We also discuss different upbringings on food and their sometimes oppositional views.

Episode 203 Not a Problem Child: Listener Question on Listening, Lying, and Not Thinking

Problem Child by GeeHock at Flickr.

Problem Child by GeeHock at Flickr.

Join me as we discuss:

A great listener write in on what appeared to be lying and not listening.

The fantastic foundation this parent has and how we can all learn from it.

Top Golden Nuggets for success with pesky behaviors.

SHOW NOTES

Often our kids do things that drive us absolutely nuts.  I’m pretty sure that male pattern balding can be directly linked to this phenomenon and I don’t know about you, but sometimes I want to blame my kids for being folically challenged.  I kid.  I have my hair.

Today we cover a listener question on his kiddo not listening, seeming to lie, and how to turn this around.  Also, how the answer to this is harder than most people want to hear, but ABSOLUTELY possible, even in short periods of time.

It’s Spring Break…FOO!

spring_break
It’s Spring Break FOO!  For all that are wondering when you wake up this morning and wonder where FPN is…well…forget you.  I’m probably doing something Spring-breakey.  Ok,  I’m probably working on a list of projects I had for the Spring Break, or playing with my kids etc.

Bottom line is this.  There will be no show today.  Due to the fact that Jeff and I both wanted a briz-rake from recording this week, there will also be no Real Family Guys Podcast.  If you are Jonesing for something to listen to, go check out The Marriage Podcast since Corrie and I will be kicking out a killer episode (seriously, this is going to be one of my personal favorites).

Hope you guys enjoy your break.  If you want to talk over the break, please feel free to touch base on our FB Page for FPN.   We love connecting with you there!

Episode 202 Spring Break: Parents Gone Wild

Parents Gone Wild by Enokson at Flickr.

Parents Gone Wild by Enokson at Flickr.

Join me as we discuss:

Spring Break.  What is the Casa de Gibson doing over their break to build as much relationship with their kids as possible?

How so many families plan on vacations that they are not actually in the same room mentally or emotionally.

Top 5 things the Gibson’s will be doing to build up their family.

SHOW NOTES

Often the middle of the year is when things can start to suck.  Our novelty experience on the new year has worn off and now we are dealing with the things that have been suffering.  Sometimes, unfortunately, that thing is our relationship with our kid.

Yes, even Trey and Corrie deal with this in our kids.  When things are busy, blowin-and-goin’, we have a tendency to backlog our experiences with our kids and when their love banks are drained, they let us know it.

So this year we have decided to be very strategic with our Spring Break and make some specific times with the kiddos doing things that aren’t always normal for us.

Join us today we discuss Spring Break and how it is such a good time to build relationship with our kid, without ever having to go to Disney Land.

Episode 34 RFGP Major Bummer: Dealing with Disappointment

Disappointed by theloushe at Flickr.

Disappointed by theloushe at Flickr.

Join me as we discuss:

Dealing with disappointment with kids, and even seeing it as a good thing.

How to turn kiddos being disappointed to optimistic in a short period of time.

How teaching kids how to handle disappointment can EVEN help in the teen years.

SHOW NOTES

Kids will often get disappointed about what we feel are the wierdest things.  They’ve never had to worry about what they will eat that day, or how the lights will stay on and seem to get upset with the wieniest of things like not getting to play with their blocks any more.

But even though that may be true, kids still feel the same emotion you and I do, but they come with the disadvantage that they haven’t learned how to deal with it well yet.  So it’s our jobs to show them just HOW to.

Join Jeff and I today as we discuss how to help kiddos take the disappointing crap and make it into something beneficial.

Episode 201 Raise Em’ Right So Praise Em’ Right

You Rock by Caro Wallis at Flickr.

You Rock by Caro Wallis at Flickr.

Join me as we discuss:

The different kinds of praise and how they are not all created equal.

Personal, Performance, and Effort Based Praise

Why effort-based is not floo-floo and why it is the best of the praises.

SHOW NOTES

Praise is in short supply these days.  People seem to be getting further and further away from the complimentary notice of someone when they are doing things right.  And yet, in parenting, there are fewer things that are more vital than praise.

Praise is the fuel that makes things go in our relationships with our kids and yet so few of us know much about it.  Maybe we can give a conjured up definition to the best of our abilities, but few of us know that there are more than one types and that they carry different levels of power to them.
